The Benefits of Two Way Radio for a Golf course

Most golf courses are very large, a typical 18 hole golf course could cover 100 acres. Significant money is spent by members of a golf club so it is important that they are taken care of and any problems overcome. That’s why your club’s staff need to be able to communicate instantly and effectively.

This is where the benefits of a two way radio system come in. The benefit of two way radio is that once you have received your business radio licence to operate, all communications between users are instant and free.

Two way radios allow your team to stay connected making sure that your course is managed securely and efficiently. There are many tasks on a golf course ranging from the club professional, to those in the golf shop, restaurant and bar and the green keepers who manicure the greens.

Marshals/officials at an event will need radio comms to stay in contact and make sure everything is coordinated. During a tournament, a radio system instantly connects tournament management with timekeepers, the pro-shop/player registration desk, practice area, car parks, marshals, course officials, caddies and other staff.

Mobile radios also let people know of weather conditions, greenkeepers can use them to coordinate the use of water sprinklers and course repair to keep the course in top condition.

Choosing the right radio system is incredibly important. A radio system choice can be determined by the size of the course and the club’s needs. Typically UHF radios are used on many courses having club houses and structures, as radio waves need to penetrate the walls. If your radios are going to be used exclusively outdoors, a VHF radio system would also be suitable.

If you are running a Par 3 golf course or a driving range with only a small distance to cover, then an unlicensed PMR446 radio would be sufficient. If you are looking at anything bigger then you will need a radio with more power, possibly 5 watt licenced radios, to make sure that distance and terrain is covered. Licensed radios are repeater compatible allowing you to expand your system for better coverage of the course or estate should you need to in the future.

Other important considerations include:

Battery life: This is also important and you should choose radios that will provide a full day’s usage. The standard lithium ion battery of your Icom two way radio should allow you to do this.

Channel Usage: This may be important should you wish to assign channels to different members of staff so make sure you purchase from a reputable dealer who can do this programming for you.

Waterproofing: Considering the outside nature of the sport and where we live, waterproofing may be an important criterion. Many of the Icom range are water and dust proof and meet military specifications for ruggedness and durability. These radios will not let you down, whatever the weather condition.

Icom has a complete portfolio of radio solutions to suit all requirements. If you are interested in seeing our latest radio systems, contact our sales staff on 01227 741741 or via email at sales@icomuk.co.uk.
