Classic RS-500 Touring Car Uses Icom IDAS Digital Two Way Radios

A classic RS-500 Sierra Cosworth Touring Car with Icom livery from yesteryear recently came to our offices to be fitted with the latest Icom IDAS digital two way equipment. Whelan Historic Motorsport will be using Icom IDAS digital radios as their primary means of communication between pit lane and the vehicle for the forthcoming seasons racing.

Installed in the RS-500 is an IC-F6122D digital mobile two way radio mounted with custom wiring loom. The PTT switch has been placed on the steering wheel and wired into the drivers headset. The support team has been supplied with Icom IC-F4102D digital two way handportables, each of which have been programmed with encryption. Headsets were supplied by Talking Headsets. Antenna was supplied by Procom.

The Sierra Cosworth RS-500 Group 8 Touring Car has quite a history having raced in Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore and Asian Pacific Series in 1988-89. This year, Whelan Historic Motorsport will be running the car in the Super Touring Car Championship in the UK. The team will take part in two races at Thruxton at Easter, then two events at Brands Hatch Superprix, two races at Silverstone and then the Oulton Park Gold Cup. James Whelan, Owner of Whelan Historic Motorsport said, ‘The digital two way radios will be used for communication between the vehicle and pit lane. We always run comms so that we can communicate with everyone in the team in organizing coming in for tyres or fuel or if we have a problem.’
